Civil Liability

Any motorized vehicle such as a car, truck, machinery, or other vehicles operating on public roads must be covered by a mandatory Civil Liability policy. If not, the vehicle owner risks a fine, confiscation of the vehicle, or even imprisonment.

This coverage only provides compensation for damages caused to others. If the driver of the vehicle is not at fault in the accident, this insurance does not apply.

It covers:

  • the liability of the vehicle owner,
  • the liability of the passengers in the insured vehicle.
  • the liability of any person who has custody of or is driving the vehicle, even unauthorized

Passenger Coverage

Passenger coverage guarantees compensation regardless of the circumstances of the accident. Typically, any person injured in a traffic accident is compensated by the insurer of the at-fault party, provided that the responsible party is identified.

However, there are some exceptions:

  • you are the driver at fault or the only party involved in the accident,
  • the responsible party is unknown (hit-and-run, etc.),
  • the responsible party is identified, but insolvent.

Disputes may also arise, delaying the payment of compensation owed to you.

To avoid these issues, you can opt for "driver or traffic insurance". You will be compensated based on your choice: in the event of death, disability, inability to work, or for medical expenses.

Depending on the plan, you can also insure family members and other passengers, whether as drivers or passengers of a motor vehicle, pedestrians, or cyclists involved in a traffic accident, or as users of public transportation. You can choose between fixed compensation amounts or compensation based on common law, which legally determines compensation for traffic accident victims.

Comprehensive Insurance

It is generally recommended to opt for full comprehensive insurance for the first 5 years and a partial insurance after that.

Partial insurance covers your vehicle against fire, theft, damage to windows, natural disasters, and collisions with animals.

Full coverage also covers accidental damage. It is generally recommended to opt for full comprehensive insurance during the first 5 years and a partial after that. In the event of a claim, the insurance company compensates the client based on the repair value (as determined by an automotive expert in agreement with the repair garage). In cases of total loss—when the sum of the salvage value and repair costs exceeds the pre-accident value of the vehicle—the policyholder is compensated according to the terms of the contract.

Legal Protection

In the event of a dispute following a traffic accident, legal protection insurance allows you to be represented by the legal experts of your choice.

Legal protection insurance covers the fees for lawyers, experts, and court costs if they are your responsibility in case of a dispute related to a traffic accident. However, it does not cover civil (compensation) or criminal (fines) penalties.

Assistance

Assistance is at your side 24/7, whether your vehicle breaks down or is involved in an accident, whether abroad or in Belgium.

The company covers roadside assistance and, if necessary, towing.

There are different assistance plans available, depending on whether you need an annual or temporary contract. However, be cautious of limited coverage in basic plans.

It may be worth considering a comprehensive plan.
